How to choose a padel racket: your ultimate buying guide

How to choose a padel racket text on blue background

Here in the pdhsports.com Players' Lounge, we're a team of padel lovers who spend as much time as we can on the court (our boss might say a bit too much!) Much as we love the game, we know that choosing the right padel racket can be overwhelming. There are so many brilliant options out there from excellent brands, with a host of different features and benefits.

Somehow, you need to decide which padel racket is right for YOU. That's why we've put our heads together, drawing on our own experience to create this definitive guide. We'll break down everything you need to know about choosing a padel racket, so you can strut onto the court with confidence, knowing you've made the perfect choice to elevate your game.

Padel racket head shapes: power vs. control

A key feature of a padel racket is its shape. This has a massive impact on how the racket feels and performs. The three shapes are round, teardrop, and diamond.

  • Round: The most forgiving shape, a round head padel racket has a central sweet spot. Its generous hitting area makes it a sound choice for less experienced players, but it's also great for players who excel on the defence and prioritise control and precision. The low balance point (closer to the handle) makes this padel racket easy to manoeuvre, so you can react quickly at the net.

  • Teardrop: This shape is a hybrid of a round and diamond racket. The sweet spot is slightly higher than a round head racket, giving you a better blend of power and control. A teardrop padel racket is a rightly popular choice for intermediate players and all-rounders who want versatility. It offers enough power to put away volleys along with the control you need for tactical play.

  • Diamond: The diamond shape is the powerhouse of the padel world. With a high balance point and a smaller sweet spot at the top of the racket, it's designed for maximum power. In our view, it's best suited to capable players with a solid technique who can consistently hit the sweet spot. If you love to smash and dominate the net, a diamond-shaped padel racket might be your best friend.

Weight and balance: your ideal set-up

The weight of a padel racket can affect your game, your endurance and your risk of injury. A heavier padel racket generates more power, as the increased mass transfers more energy to the ball. But this demands more strength, so can lead to arm fatigue and can cause or exacerbate injuries like tennis (or padel) elbow.

  • Lightweight (340-365g): Ideal for beginners, players with compact body typies or those with a history of arm injuries. A lighter padel racket offers terrific agility and control. You can react faster and put less strain on your elbows, wrists and shoulders at the same time.

  • Medium weight (365-375g): The most common weight range. You'll get a balanced mix of power and control, which works well for intermediates who are developing their game and players who don't have a particular preference or need for a lighter or heavier padel racket.

  • Heavyweight (375g+): The top choice of advanced, powerful players who can handle the extra weight to generate explosive shots.

Balance means the distribution of weight through the padel racket's frame and head. A head-heavy racket is said to have high balance. This puts more weight in the head for power. A head-light racket has low balance, so it can be easier to handle, giving you more control.

Materials and features: padel racket technology and design

The materials used in a padel racket's core and face determine its feel, power and durability. Unlike strung tennis rackets, padel racket heads are solid. They're made from a combination of different materials that are layered and moulded together in a more complex construction process.

  • Core: The core is often made of EVA foam or polyethylene foam. EVA foam is stiffer, providing more power and a firmer feel. Softer foams offer more comfort and vibration absorption, which is great for players with joint issues, but they tend to be less powerful on fast shots.

  • Face: The face is the surface of the racket that makes contact with the ball. It can be made of fibreglass, carbon fibre or a mix of both. Fibreglass is flexible and forgiving - not surprisingly it features heavily in rackets for beginner and improving platers. Carbon fibre is stiffer, providing more power and durability. The higher the K number (3K, 12K, 18K etc), the more carbon fibres are in the weave, giving you a stiffer, more powerful padel racket.

Innovation is everywhere in this super fast growing sport, so padel racket performance and construction becomes more sophisticated every year. Top brands develop distinctive technologies and designs in their research labs - there's more on some of those below.

Making your choice: a padel racket for your level and gameplay

The best padel racket for you depends on your individual skill level, playing style and how you want to develop your gameplay... or competitive edge.

  • Beginner: Your priority is control and mastering the full range of padel shots. Look for a round-shaped, light or medium weight padel racket with a soft core and fibreglass face. This combination will make it easier to hit the ball consistently and develop your technique without injury.

  • Intermediate: You've mastered the basics and are looking to add more variety to your game. A teardrop-shaped padel racket is a fantastic choice, as it offers a great balance of power and control. You're ready to explore rackets with a mix of carbon and fibreglass on the face and a medium density core, for more responsive play and power.

  • Advanced: You have a refined technique and a signature playing style. Choose a racket that amplifies your strengths. If you're an aggressive player, a diamond-shaped padel racket with a firm core and a high-K carbon fibre face will give you maximum power. If you’re a tactical genius, a high-end round or teardrop racket will provide the precision you need to dominate.
