When is it time to replace your padel racket? The signs you need to look out for

When is it time to replace your padel racket? The signs you need to look out for

One of the beauties of padel rackets is that they’re designed for durability. Manufactured with an inner layer of foam and an outer layer comprising of fibreglass or carbon, padel rackets can take a lot of punishment on the court. They’re not indestructible, though.

Just like tennis, badminton and squash rackets, the time will come when you need to replace your padel racket. But what signs mean your padel racket may be broken, and when is it time to replace it?

The experts at PDH Sports have the answers to these questions, helping you to continue achieving peak performance during gameplay.

How do padel rackets wear out?

As padel rackets are designed slightly differently to rackets in other sports, it’s helpful to know what contributes to them wearing out. The most common reason is how often you play with your padel racket.

A padel racket’s average lifespan is hotly debated, depending on whether it’s a beginner, intermediate or expert-level racket. However, most players and brands say that padel rackets can last around 12 to 18 months. Depending on how often you visit the court during the week, you can look to get around just over a year of match play and training out of a racket. So, match play will wear out your padel racket but what are the other factors?

The court itself can impact the amount of wear your padel racket receives. Obviously hitting the court walls and net will gradually damage your racket, but you may be surprised that the court surface can wear your racket out too.

A padel court that has an abrasive surface will damage the protective layer of your racket, making it uneven during match play and eventually unplayable. A poorly kept padel court surface can sometimes hold moisture which, if your racket touches, can seep into the inner layer of your racket, damaging the internal fibres and rendering it unsuitable for matchplay.

What signs or sounds mean your padel racket needs replacing?

There are various signs and sounds that signify that it’s time to replace your padel racket. Some you will see, feel, or hear during matchplay, whereas others are more noticeable off the court.

Cosmetic signs that you might need to replace your padel racket

1. Cracks appearing on your padel racket

Cracks are easy to see on a padel racket and a strong sign that it’s ready to be replaced. A small crack will gradually grow and once it gets to a certain length or width, it indicates the structure is damaged, meaning a replacement racket is the only answer.

An interesting point is that cracks can appear and grow in extreme weather conditions. That’s why we recommend storing your racket in a padel bag, so it avoids direct contact with heat from the sun (which can affect the racket structure) and icy wintry weather (which makes the internal components more prone to fracturing).

2. Dents and wear to the racket face

Like cracks, you’ll easily see when the face of a padel racket has dents, becomes smooth, and shows signs of wear. Although minor scuffs and scratches won’t have much effect on the performance of your padel racket, be mindful that these can soon grow and once they get to a substantial size, your racket will need replacing.

Signs that you need to replace your padel racket during matchplay

1. Your padel racket sounds dull on impact

When you hit a padel ball with your racket, it should make a “thud” or “pop” noise on impact. This means that the inner layer is absorbing the impact of the ball effectively. If, however, your padel racket sounds “dull” or makes a “click” noise, this is a sign that the surface layers are struggling and your padel racket has had too much wear.

A training tip

If you notice a dull noise during match play, take a few minutes after the game to hit a ball against your racket and see if the noise is consistent. Sometimes, an unusual noise can occur if you hit a padel ball incorrectly, so it’s always better to double-check.

2. A decrease in control

Losing control of the ball when your racket hits it can be another sign that your padel racket needs replacing. When previously it was easy to place the ball at a certain part of the court, an overly worn racket will provide you with little control and make potentially winning shots meaningless.

3. A loss of power

When once previously powerful smashes would have won you a game, you might find even with the same amount of effort, the ball won’t make it over the net when you hit it with your racket. This can be another symptom that your padel racket needs replacing as it can signify the core has worn and power is not being distributed correctly.

4. Your padel racket will vibrate more

Like damage to the core of your padel racket affecting power, you will feel more vibrations when a padel ball hits your racket as it gets worn down. Vibrations can signal that your racket is not absorbing the impact of the ball correctly, which means shots will be poorer and your overall performance will decrease.

5. Your padel racket is no longer suitable for your level of matchplay

While this reason isn’t strictly related to wear and tear, it’s still a key factor you need to think about when it comes to replacing your padel racket. You may have a beginner-level racket, but as your padel play has improved, your racket may no longer deliver the best results on the court. So, consider that it might be time for an upgrade!

We’ve intermediate and expert-level rackets from all the most popular padel brands, including Adidas, Babolat, Bullpadel, and Wilson, meaning that when the time arrives, you can confidently replace your racket and get back to dominating the court.

Has the time arrived when you need to replace your padel racket?

If you’ve noticed any of the signs we’ve listed throughout this article, then it’s a good time to consider replacing your padel racket. While wear and cracks may appear minimal to begin with, remember that they can soon grow, affecting not only your match performance, but also your overall enjoyment on the court.
